Cereal Giant Kellogg’s Recalls Millions Of Mini-Wheats Cereal Boxes.

Today, cereal consumers may be crying for a reason other than the proverbial spilled milk. This is because cereal giant, Kellogg’s, has recalled millions of its Mini-Wheats cereal boxes in fears that the boxes may contain pieces of metal mesh.

According to the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall affects boxes of Kellogg’s Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite-Size Original and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size cereals, which are distributed throughout the country.

Thankfully, no personal injuries have been reported as of yet from this product defect, but Kellogg’s is working diligently to remove all potentially contaminated boxes from store shelves.

The recall is estimated to have cost Kellogg’s between $20 million and $30 million.

High Lead Levels Connected To Lower Academic Performance In Children.

A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research has linked high lead levels in Massachusetts children to lower academic performance.

The study, conducted on groups of children at Massachusetts schools from 2000 to 2009, has shown that the strong lead laws in Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Department of Health’s successful Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program have reduced lead levels in Massachusetts children and led to an improvement in students’ test scores.

In the study, groups of children with higher levels of blood-lead exposure were likely to do worse on tests, but those scores improved as blood-lead levels dropped.

According to the study’s authors, lead exposure has long been recognized to hurt cognitive abilities, as well as increase criminal activity.

Thousands of Americans Die Every Year From Food Poisoning.

According to a new report featured as the cover story of the November 2012 issue of “Bloomberg Markets,” Americans are at serious risk of personal injury and even death from food poisoning.

According to the report, in 2011 alone, 48.7 million Americans contracted a foodborne illness. These illnesses resulted in 127,839 hospitalizations and 3,037 wrongful deaths.

Lack of food market regulations is apparently mostly to blame, and the US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) simply does not have the resources to monitor the safety of all food sold in the United States.

As a result, the FDA outsources many of its inspection responsibilities to private agencies, which themselves are subject to little, if any, government oversight.

Experts say the situation is even worse for imported food, which is rarely subjected to any domestic inspection.
