A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research has linked high lead levels in Massachusetts children to lower academic performance.
The study, conducted on groups of children at Massachusetts schools from 2000 to 2009, has shown that the strong lead laws in Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Department of Health’s successful Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program have reduced lead levels in Massachusetts children and led to an improvement in students’ test scores.
In the study, groups of children with higher levels of blood-lead exposure were likely to do worse on tests, but those scores improved as blood-lead levels dropped.
According to the study’s authors, lead exposure has long been recognized to hurt cognitive abilities, as well as increase criminal activity.
