According to a new report featured as the cover story of the November 2012 issue of “Bloomberg Markets,” Americans are at serious risk of personal injury and even death from food poisoning.
According to the report, in 2011 alone, 48.7 million Americans contracted a foodborne illness. These illnesses resulted in 127,839 hospitalizations and 3,037 wrongful deaths.
Lack of food market regulations is apparently mostly to blame, and the US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) simply does not have the resources to monitor the safety of all food sold in the United States.
As a result, the FDA outsources many of its inspection responsibilities to private agencies, which themselves are subject to little, if any, government oversight.
Experts say the situation is even worse for imported food, which is rarely subjected to any domestic inspection.
