One Dead, More Than Thirty Injured in Vermont Bus-Truck Collision.

A severe crash involving a tractor-trailer and a tour bus sent more than thirty people to the hospital on Friday, February 21, 2014.

According to reports, the accident occurred after the tractor-trailer jackknifed, blocking the northbound lanes of a highway in West Haven, Vermont.  The tour bus crested a hill before the driver saw the jackknifed tractor-trailer, and the driver lost control of his bus as he attempted to avoid the truck.  The bus, which was carrying 32 passengers including the driver, slammed into the guardrails on the side of the road, then collided with the trailer.

The bus driver, 59-year-old Darnell Hannah of Millstone, NJ, was pinned in the bus with critical injuries.  Emergency responders were eventually able to free him, but he died upon arrival at a nearby hospital.   The other 31 passengers on the bus were transported to two local hospitals, Porter Hospital in Middlebury and Rutland Regional Medical Center, with mostly minor injuries.  Two of the passengers, however, suffered moderate injuries.  The driver of the tractor trailer, 34-year-old Haroon Kalid of Scotrun, PA, was also transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center with injuries.

Police say that icy roads were a contributing factor in the accident.  Traffic was blocked for several hours as emergency responders treated the injured individuals and cleared the roadway.

Several People Hospitalized After Severe Turbulence During Montana-Bound Flight Causes Injuries.

At least five people suffered serious injuries and many more were shaken up on Monday, February 17, when the Boeing 737 airplane in which they were flying experienced heavy turbulence during its descent to an airport in Billings, Montana.

The flight left from Denver, Colorado carrying 114 passengers and 5 crew members. It was flying over Montana airspace and had just started its descent to the airport in Billings around 1:30 PM when the turbulence began.  The turbulence caused the plane to drop suddenly, throwing passengers into the air.  Following the turbulence, the pilot was forced to declare a medical emergency on board the plane due to his passengers’ and crew members’ injuries.

According to witnesses, one of the people thrown into the air was an infant who was thrown into another seat in the plane.  Witnesses stated that the baby appeared to avoid serious injury.  Another passenger, an adult woman, was thrown into the air so severely that her head crashed through the ceiling above her, and several other people reported injuries from being throw into the air, including head, neck and back injuries. Upon landing, at least five of the injured passengers and crew were hospitalized for their injuries.

United Airlines, the company that owns the plane, released a statement following the incident stating that its flight safety team is investigating the incident.

Drunk Driver Kills Sister, Friend And A Family Of Four.

Olivia Culbreath was the only survivor in a tragic crash she caused when she got behind the wheel of her red Chevrolet Camaro early Sunday morning. Suspected to have been heavily intoxicated at the time of the crash, Culbreath was driving 100 mph going the wrong way on the California highway.

The 21-year-old drunk driver collided head-on with a Ford Explorer holding a family of four. All four passengers in Explorer died at the scene. Also killed in the crash, were both of Culbreath’s passengers: her 24-year-old sister and a 24-year-old friend. A third vehicle became entangled in the crash, but the driver of that vehicle only experienced minor injuries.

According to witnesses, Culbreath was driving more than 100 miles an hour when the collision occurred. Although her blood alcohol content has not been released to the media, it is pretty clear that alcohol was the primary factor in the devastating crash. Law enforcement at the scene and at the hospital reported Culbreath exhibited clear signs of intoxication.

Culbreath has been charged with six counts of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI. The new mother to a seven-month-old is being treated at the hospital for a broken femur and ruptured bladder. She remains in police custody at the hospital.
