A Braintree, MA man was arrested for drinking and driving after a recent car accident.  Paul Boyce exhibited signs of intoxication while talking to police officers following the car accident.  At the police station, Boyce’s blood alcohol level registered twice the legal limit.  Boyce was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, operating to endanger, and failing to keep within his travel lane.

Washington State Attorney General Investigates Alleged Elder Abuse.

The Washington State Attorney General is investigating the alleged nursing home abuse of two wheelchair bound, 90 plus year-old nursing home residents at the Willows Retirement Living Community.

The alleged elder neglect was reported recently by a coworker of the alleged abuser. According to the coworker, the abusive employee was rough with the two patients, stepping on their feet and poking them in the head and neck. In addition, the coworker alleged that the abusive employee would often cover the residents’ mouths and nostrils so that they would stop talking.

The involved nursing home said that the allegations have not been proven, and that it has turned over the investigation to local police as is required by law. The Attorney General’s office has not yet confirmed or denied the allegations, and will continue to investigate the case.

Patient On Novartis Drug Contracts Viral Brain Infection.

A patient who was taking Novartis AG’s multiple sclerosis pill, Gilenya, contracted a severely harmful (and often deadly) viral brain infection known as multifoclal leukoencephalopathy (or PML for short). The patient was also taking a Biogen Idec Inc. medicine known as Tysabri, an injection known to increase the risk of PML. Since 2006, Tysabri’s warning label has informed patients that taking the medication can increase the risk of PML.

Novartis said that the Tysabri was most likely the cause of the infection, but did not rule out the possibility that Gilenya was a contributing factor. Regardless, the infection has Novartis worried because regulators are currently looking into the unexplained deaths of 11 Gilenya patients since the drug was approved in 2010. Over 36,000 people have taken the drug since its approval, but regulators are investigating the 11 deaths as part of a broader look into Gilenya’s safety and efficacy.

Gilenya is predicted to become a blockbuster drug for Novartis, with analysts saying that the drug will be garnering about $2.06 billion in annual sales by 2015.
