UFC Star Blames Food Poisoning For Disappointing Loss.

Diego Sanchez, one of the winners of the first season of Ultimate Fighter, claims that his loss to Myles Jury at UFC 171 was due to food poisoning that he got as a result of eating beef tartar with a raw quail egg as an appetizer at dinner after weigh-ins.

After his loss to Jury, who is now 14-0, Sanchez tweeted, “I wasn’t my self last night I sustained Food poisoning from eating a beef tar tar with raw quail egg as a appetizer at dinner.”  He followed his first tweet up by tweeting, “This was my own mistake I ordered it thinking I need red meat but raw was the wrong choice, I threw up first at at 2am & all day fight day.”  He finished by tweeting, “This was not part of @TheDolceDiet I screwed my self! I thought because I had done everything do perfect I could sway a little & it cost me,” and then posted a link substantiating his claims in a subsequent tweet.

Sanchez had been 17-0 until he lost to Josh Koscheck at UFC 69 is now 3-5 in his last eight fights.  He remains optimistic despite his recent setbacks, as he tweeted on Sunday, March 16, 2014, “I’m heart broken and very very motivated it hurts so bad. I’ll be back better than ever!”

Missouri Man Files $100 Million Wrongful Imprisonment Suit After Murder Conviction Overturned.

In 2005, 19 year-old Ryan Ferguson was convicted of murder. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Ferguson’s conviction was overturned in November, and he was subsequently released from a Missouri penitentiary.  Now, Ferguson is seeking $75 million in wrongful imprisonment damages, and an additional $25 million in punitive damages, for the 10 years of his life that he lost while serving the prison sentence for a crime he didn’t commit.

In 2005, Ferguson was convicted in the 2001 death of Columbia Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt.  Prosecutors alleged that Ferguson murdered Heitholt in the newspaper’s parking lot, relying heavily on the testimony of Chuck Erickson,  a co-defendant in the murder who claimed to have been with Ferguson that night.  Erickson initially told police he had no memory about what happened that night, but told prosecutors two years later that he had begun to remember the killing.

On Monday, March 10, following his release from prison, Ferguson filed a lawsuit in the federal court in Kansas City, MO, naming numerous parties as defendants, including Columbia Police Chief Randy Boehm, former Boone County prosecutor Kevin Crane, nine Columbia police detectives and prosecutor’s investigators, the city of Columbia, MO, and Boone County.  Ferguson alleges that he was wrongfully convicted, and that police improperly and illegally fed Erickson details about the crime to bolster his confession.

Increase In Use Of Bicycles In Daily Commute Poses Serious Safety Risks.

Ann-Doerth Hass Jensen, a Copenhagen social worker, was riding her bicycle to work, as bicycling is often the fastest way to travel in Copenhagen, when a school bus traveling to a kindergarten ran a red light and crashed into her, knocking her off her bicycle, trapping her underneath, and crushing her left foot.

Hass Jensen was then rushed to the hospital in excruciating pain with every bone in her left foot shattered.  She was hospitalized for six weeks following the accident, had part of her left foot amputated, required her salvageable bones to be wired back into place, and had skin grafts from her thigh in order to replace the torn and missing flesh.  It took her a year to be able to walk again and the missing part of her foot is a crucial stepping point, so her balance is significantly affected.

People in Copenhagen own 5.2 bicycles for every car, as over a third of residents bicycle to work, school, or college.  Fortunately for Hass Jensen, the city of Copenhagen has helped her get a special three wheeled bicycle that has allowed her to regain her independent mobility.  While many cities across the world are examining the potential benefits of cycling as opposed to driving, there are many potential risks involved with choosing this method of transportation.  Cyclists are exposed to significant risks of personal injury or death by choosing to cycling as their main method of transportation.

Some cities, such as Paris, have attempted to mitigate these risks by adding new bicycle lanes in order to make cycling safer for commuters.  Paris bicycle lanes require cars to park facing cyclists so that passenger side doors open to bike traffic, rather than drivers’ side doors, which decreases the risk of bikers crashing into car doors.  The city has also designated some roads for bicycles and buses, which lowers vehicle traffic in such lanes.  While the health benefits associated with bicycling have a positive economic impact and fatal accidents are reported as small “population level costs” in population health studies, fatal bicycle accidents have catastrophic costs for individuals affected in such accidents, as well as their loved ones.

Bicycle accidents can result in serious and life-long personal injuries and even death.  While some cities are encouraging the use of bicycling as a method of transportation, there are serious risks involved with this method of transportation, especially in densely populated areas.  You might be entitled to relief if a distracted or otherwise negligent motorist caused your accident.
