Three construction workers have died, one remains missing, and another is in critical condition after a portion of the five-story parking garage being constructed for Miami-Dade College in Doral, Florida collapsed last Wednesday.
The construction workers were working on the parking garage, which was nearing completion, when a portion of the garage collapsed in what authorities are calling a “pancake-style collapse.” An eyewitness reported seeing the garage fold onto itself like a “house of cards.”
The rubble from the collapse buried a crane, a heavy truck and several workers in a pile of rubble that reached as high as 20 feet. Eight injured workers were rushed to nearby hospital emergency rooms. Two were pronounced dead on arrival.
Another worker removed from the rubble during the rescue operation had to have both legs amputated in order to be freed. That worker later died.
Ajax Building Corp, the contractor in charge of building the parking garage, has launched an internal investigation into the cause of the fatal collapse.
The $22.5 million project was nearing completion when the collapse occurred.
