Children At High Risk For Injury On Trampolines.

The federal American Academy of Pediatrics (“AAP”) has released a statement saying that the recreational use of trampolines poses a major injury risk to children, and that there is no way to significantly reduce that risk.

In 2009 alone, there were 98,000 reported injuries to children caused by trampoline use, many of which required hospitalization.  The rate of injury to children ages 0 to 4 was 70 injuries per 100,000 children, and the rate of injury to kids ages 5 to 14 was 160 per 100,000.

Studies show that three quarters of trampoline injuries occur while multiple children are on the trampoline, and approximately one-half of injuries occur when an adult is nearby.

Researchers from the AAP stated that although many companies have begun selling netting and other trampoline enclosures, there is no evidence that these safety features reduce the risk of personal injury from trampoline use.

Flying Coach Class Could Save Your Life In A Plane Crash.

According to one $1.5 million study, flying first-class may be more dangerous than flying coach.

During the remote controlled crash of a Boeing 727 in a desert in Mexico, the plane’s front, which included the front 11 rows of the plane, broke off.

Researchers believe that if the plane had been filled with human passengers, 100% of those flying first-class would have died, while 78% of those flying coach would have survived. The further back you went in the plane, the higher your chance of survival.

The researchers concluded that modern jets are better able to handle a crash like the one in the experiment, but believe that it is still safer to sit further back in the plane.

Words to the wise.

8 Oklahoma Firefighters Burned Fighting School Fire.

8 Tulsa, Oklahoma firefighters suffered burns while attempting to put out a fire at the Barnard Public School. The fire is believed to have been caused by explosions in one of the school’s chemistry labs.

Three of the firefighters required skin grafts. One of the firefighters was released Monday, nearly 2 weeks after the fire. Two more are still at the Hillcrest Medical Center’s Alexander Burn Center receiving inpatient care.

The names of the injured firefighters have not yet been released.

The Tulsa Fire Marshal’s Office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms concluded that the fire was accidentally caused by renovations in the building. The building was being renovated after the Tulsa Public Schools leased it to a charter school, the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences.
