Rutgers University Fires Men’s Basketball Coach For Abusing Players During Practice.

Mike Rice, the head coach of the men’s basketball team at Rutgers University in New Jersey, was fired this past Wednesday. This was after a video surfaced a day earlier showing the coach shoving players, throwing basketballs at their heads, berating them, kicking them, and using homophobic slurs and other profane language during team practices.

The video, which was released by the television network ESPN, depicted Rice’s behavior during numerous Rutgers practices. Several hours of footage depicted Rice’s abusive antics, for which Rutgers Athletic Director Tom Pernetti fined Rice $50,000 and suspended him for three games.

Pernetti levied the fine and suspension against Rice after watching the video footage back in November 2012. But he decided to fire the coach after the video caused significant backlash against the school, coach and athletic department in the mainstream media.

The video was made by Eric Murdock, a former NBA player who worked under Rice at Rutgers as the director of player development. He was later fired from the program, prompting his release of the video to ESPN.

Murdock insists that he was fired for complaining to the administration about Rice’s outrageous misconduct. Murdock further indicated that he plans to sue Rutgers University for wrongful termination.

Former Rutgers player, Frank Mitchell, defended Rice, saying that the abusive behavior was not the norm, and that these were only isolated incidents of physical contact and throwing basketballs.

Private Aeronautics Company Developing Spacecraft That Land Rather Than Splash Down.

SpaceX, a private aeronautics company that has successfully completed several missions to the International Space Station, plans to manufacture spacecraft that land rather than splash down, and rockets with first stages that return to Cape Canaveral. The company’s chief designer, Elon Musk, aims to produce the spacecraft by the end of 2014.

The company’s newest spacecraft model design, the Falcon 9, is 60-70% more powerful than the current rocket. It will debut in late November 2013. SpaceX hopes to make first-stage ocean recoveries before attempting powered landings at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Though Musk does not expect immediate success with the prototypes, he is optimistic that SpaceX will be able to return first stage rockets to their launch sites using landing legs and propulsive landing technology.

SpaceX’s Dragon 2 spacecraft, featuring these landing capabilities, could be a huge breakthrough in the space exploration industry. Rockets with the capability to re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere, and land rather than splashing down, would mean huge cuts in costs. It could also mean fully reusable spacecraft and launch systems.

Officials at NASA expect to have operational versions of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft by 2017, though SpaceX says it could be sooner, indicating that piloted versions could be up and running by 2015.

FDA Evaluating Drug Manufacturer’s New Grass Allergy Pill.

The federal Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) is reviewing a new pill manufactured by Merck & Co.  Company officials from the drug producer say that the pill can significantly alleviate grass pollen allergies over time.

Merck’s new drug is an immunotherapy tablet that is dissolved under the tongue. Merck claims that the new tablet will reduce allergy symptoms over time, rather than just alleviate them temporarily, as current allergy drugs do.

According to Merck, a consumer would take the tablet daily throughout the peak allergy season for a period of three years. The idea is to gradually desensitize the consumer’s immune system to the substance that triggers allergic reactions.

Top allergists say that Merck’s new immunotherapy tablet is a major advance over existing allergy treatments. These tablets, also being developed for other allergies, could prove to be a significant scientific breakthrough.

The only currently known side effects to the tablet are itchiness of the mouth and ear, and throat irritation.
