Judge Blocks NFL Concussion Settlement To Protect Injured Players.

On Tuesday, January 14, a Federal judge in Pennsylvania issued an order blocking a settlement agreement between former NFL players and NFL owners aimed at compensating former players who suffered head injuries while playing.

The proposed settlement was for $675 million, but the Judge Anita Brody at the U.S. District Court in eastern Pennsylvania stated that she did not believe that was enough to cover the 18,000 retired NFL players who may have suffered concussions requiring treatment.  The judge stated that she believed the fund created by the settlement would run out of money if more than 10% of those players needed treatment.

Concussions in the NFL have been in the spotlight in recent years, especially after the family of former NFL star Junior Seau blamed his suicide on mental problems he suffered as a result of head injuries during his time in the league.  Seau’s family has filed a wrongful death suit in that case.

Since details of the prevalence and severity of head injuries in the NFL has come to light, the league has added numerous rules aimed at protecting its players.  These include penalties and fines for hits to the head, as well as extra medical precautions for players suffering from symptoms related to concussions.

Missouri Child Killed In Tragic Circumstances.

A 20-month-old boy was killed in a tragic motor vehicle accident accident in St. Joseph, Missouri. The boy was not in his car seat, as required by law, when his mother collided with a snowplow.

The child’s mother, 24-year-old Alicca Williams told state troopers that she hit an icy curve and slammed on her breaks just before colliding with the snowplow. She and the snowplow operator suffered minor injuries, but sadly her son passed away after being airlifted to a Kansas City hospital.

Williams had allowed her 20-month-old son to drive up front with her and without a car seat. She was traveling only a short distance between her and her mother’s house and says she didn’t think to put him in the car seat. Williams was also driving with a suspended license at the time of the crash. Prosecutors have not decided if they will bring criminal charges against her.

Serious car accidents can occur when icy roads are not treated properly and drivers fail to take proper precautions to protect themselves and others from accidents. Grandmother And Two Boys Hit In Fatal Car Crash.

A loving grandmother, Li Fang Dong, was pushing her two grandsons in a stroller when they were hit in a tragic car accident. The 61-year-old grandmother was pronounced dead at the scene, while the boys aged one and two were resuscitated and treated at the local hospital.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Pine Island Road and Sunset Strip in Sunrise Florida, just a mile from where the family lived. Neighbors say the grandmother was quite active, always taking her grandsons out for walks.

According to police, it appears the grandmother was not using a crosswalk the night of the crash. Chalk outlines at the intersection show she was walking about 20 feet from the crosswalk when she was hit.

According to witnesses, the 23-year-old driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and appeared to be visibly shaken by the accident. The 1-year-old was thrown from the stroller and had to be resuscitated on the scene before being transported to the hospital for treatment with his cousin.

The accident occurred just after 7:00 PM last night. The family is still hoping their boys will recover from the tragic accident.
