NBA Commissioner Fines Clippers Owner $2.5 Million And Bans Him From NBA.

This past Tuesday, April 29, 2014, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling from ever attending another NBA game and fined Sterling the maximum $2.5 million allowed under NBA rules following the revelation last week of Sterling racist outbursts.

Last week, audiotapes were made public of Donald Sterling calling his girlfriend and making overtly racist comments to her. The public revelation has caused a storm in the world of sports and has largely overshadowed the NBA playoffs. In a special meeting of the NBA owners called this Tuesday, Commissioner Adam Silver ordered that Sterling pay a $2.5 million fine, banned Sterling from the NBA and promised to do everything possible to force a sale of the LA Clippers.

The demise of Sterling has caused headaches for the owners of other NBA teams who must now approve the forced sale, which Sterling indicated that he might contest. The prospect of a drawn-out case can be further complicated by the possibility that Sterling will file for divorce from his wife which would place the NBA team under the jurisdiction of a California Family Court. The court will be charged with dividing the team up between Sterling and his wife under the California community property law. Independent attorneys with knowledge of Sterling’s history say that he has deep pockets and an appetite for lengthy legal battles.

A further issue is Sterling well-publicized support for the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP. The NAACP had recently honored Sterling as a great contributor to the causes of minorities, which obviously flies in the face of the statements made by Sterling to his girlfriend.

American Runner Breaks Drought By Winning Boston Marathon.

In a story much needed for a city still healing from a cruel terrorist attack that took place one year ago, American long-distance runner Meb Keflezighi won the men’s Boston Marathon after almost three decades of no American winners of the most fabled marathon in the nation.

One year ago, the city of Boston was struck with a devastating terrorist attack as two brothers from a war-torn region of Russia that were given a home in the United States placed two improvised explosive devices at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street. The two devices, made of rice cookers containing shrapnel, exploded killing three people, injuring hundreds, with 16 people losing limbs in the explosions.

One year later, the city of Boston once again held its annual tradition of the oldest marathon in the United States this past Monday, Patriots Day, April 21, 2014. The field of runners was the second largest at 36,000 as the organizers allowed all those who were not given a chance to finish because of the explosions to run again. The city also doubled its contingent of security forces, with police of various cities, National Guard, State Police, and federal agents, both uniformed and plain-clothed patrolling and sweeping all areas of the 26.2 mile long course.

On this day of healing and closure, the crowd of nearly one million spectators received a special treat as 38 year-old marathoner Meb Keflezighi, born in Eritrea, but who graduated from UCLA and lives in Mammoth Lakes, California and represents the United States, ran a winning time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, 37 seconds. Keflezighi’s victory brought jubilation to an already celebratory atmosphere as the home crowd cheered for Meb and for all those who made a heroic effort to come back from the trauma of the events one year ago.

Three Deaths Reported In Jewish Community Center Shooting.

Police in the Overland Park neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas, have arrested the man suspected of being responsible for killing three people on the grounds of Jewish community buildings this past weekend.

The shooting attack took place in the afternoon of this past Sunday, April 13, 2014, on the day before the Jewish holiday of Passover began. Well-known white supremacist Frazier Glenn Cross, also known as Glenn Miller, walked into the parking lot of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas. Miller was carrying a shotgun, which he used to open fire on the crowd gathered inside and near the center for a children’s singing competition. Miller’s blasts struck a car with a 14 year-old boy and his grandfather inside. Miller then travelled across the street to a Jewish assisted living facility where he shot and killed another person. Police arrived within minutes and placed Miller under arrest. As Miller was placed into the back of a police squad car, he was recorded shouting fascist salutes to the gathering crowd.

Miller is 73 years-old and has a long history in the white supremacy movement. He escaped serious prosecution a couple of decades ago for various hate crimes by testifying against fellow white supremacists.

Miller has now been charged with three counts of murder and federal hate crime criminal charges. Miller’s crime is tragically ironic in that not one of his three victims are actually Jewish.
