Officer Walsh was responding to a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indyweek.com\/indyweek\/police-officer-sues-sheriffs-deputy-over-dog-bite\/Content?oid=4269322\"> routine call <\/a>in early October, 2011. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">He was accompanied <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">by<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> his partner, Deputy Carson, and his canine Frisco, a Belgian Malinois. Walsh was able to catch and apprehend a fleeing suspect. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">B<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ut, while handcuffing him to the ground, Deputy Carson lost control of Frisco, who <strong>violently bit Walsh in the leg and calf<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The attack resulted in Officer Walsh needing to <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">receive<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> medical treatment for months, two of which he was incapable of working or generating an income from his second job. Besides the<strong> emotional and mental trauma <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">stemming <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">from the event, Walsh is suffering from a loss of sensation in <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">his<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong> leg<\/strong> and is suing his department to be justly compensated.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While one would expect that a police dog would be well trained and under control, multiple dog handling experts have expressed concern in the quality and expertise of K-9 Unit trainers in North Carolina, which does not require police dogs to be certified. The Belgian Malinois has gained popularity in recent years <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">with the<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> police and military <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">because of<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> its intelligence, loyalty, and strength. The breed is comparable to a German Shepherd, and has gained notoriety for its effectiveness <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">in<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Afghanistan and Iraq. Despite the intelligence and loyalty of the breed, Frisco attacked another officer, but the blame may not rest on the dog.
