{"id":1024,"date":"2015-08-03T16:33:01","date_gmt":"2015-08-03T16:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gilhoylaw.com\/blog\/?p=1024"},"modified":"2015-08-03T16:33:01","modified_gmt":"2015-08-03T16:33:01","slug":"iowa-high-school-football-player-awarded-1-million-after-suffering-head-injury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gilhoylaw.com\/blog\/iowa-high-school-football-player-awarded-1-million-after-suffering-head-injury\/","title":{"rendered":"Iowa High School Football Player Awarded $1 Million After Suffering Head Injury."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the National Center for Sports Safety, over 3.5 million children under the age of fourteen sustain injuries from sporting accidents every year.\u00a0 Sporting accidents are tragic and can result in serious <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gilhoylaw.com\/boston-massachusetts-sports-accidents-injury-lawyers-attorneys.php\">injuries<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, particularly in young people.\u00a0 <strong>Contact sports such as soccer and football carry an increased risk of severe trauma due to the greater force involved during the game.<\/strong> Preventable <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bostonmassachusettssportsrecreationaccidentinjurylawyer.com\">sports injuries<\/a><\/em><\/strong> occur for many reasons, including: inadequate protective gear; insufficient staff instruction; broken equipment; poorly maintained fields, gyms or courts; untrained or abusive coaches; unequal matching of players based on their ability and size; lack of medical equipment and safety procedures; and workouts or drills that are not well-matched to the athlete\u2019s strength or ability.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ABqbfiAiZlE\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kacey Strough, a freshman at Bedford High School in Iowa, was a member of the high school\u2019s football team during the 2012 season.\u00a0 Strough complained to his coach numerous times that his teammates were throwing footballs at his head from less than six feet away.\u00a0 The coach allegedly stated that he would handle it, but never did anything about the problem.\u00a0 Strough complained of headaches and double vision days after being hit in the head on several occasions.\u00a0 As time went on, his symptoms began to worsen, and he began experiencing slurred speech, severe headaches and partial paralysis, which resulted in hospitalization.\u00a0 After receiving a CT scan, the image showed that Strough had a condition called cavernous malformation, which leads to disruption of normal blood flow to the brain.\u00a0 <strong>Doctors believed that when Strough was hit in the head by the footballs, the malformation began to bleed.<\/strong>\u00a0 Strough underwent surgery and was placed in a medically induced coma.\u00a0 He now has to use a wheelchair and suffers from permanent brain damage.<\/p>\n<p>According to Yahoo Sports, Strough\u2019s teammates, coaches and the school nurse were aware that he complained of a possible concussion.\u00a0 He was even examined by the school nurse.\u00a0 <strong>The school and the school nurse were found to be negligent for failing to tell the coaches about the possible concussion and suggesting that they take him off the field, in compliance with a 2002 Iowa state law.<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0This law requires that coaches and officials remove a player from the field when they believe there may be a possible concussion. \u00a0Furthermore, the school and nurse were allegedly negligent in failing to follow up with Strough\u2019s caretaker to make sure a doctor examined him.\u00a0 Strough was awarded $140,000 in medical expenses and $850,000 in \u201cdamages for pain and suffering, loss of mind and body, and loss of future earnings.\u201d This is one of the largest payouts in a high school head injury case.<\/p>\n<p>Have you or a loved one suffered a sports-related injury?\u00a0 If so, please call our expert <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gilhoylaw.com\/boston-massachusetts-sports-accidents-injury-lawyers-attorneys.php\">Massachusetts sports injury lawyers<\/a><\/em><\/strong> at 617-767-3700 or email us at <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gilhoylaw.com\/boston-massachusetts-contact-gilbert-hoy-lawyers-attorneys.php\">info@gilhoylaw.com<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the National Center for Sports Safety, over 3.5 million children under the age of fourteen sustain injuries from sporting accidents every year.\u00a0 Sporting accidents are tragic and can result in serious injuries, particularly in young people.\u00a0 Contact sports &hellip;
