{"id":1021,"date":"2015-08-03T14:35:32","date_gmt":"2015-08-03T14:35:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gilhoylaw.com\/blog\/?p=1021"},"modified":"2015-08-03T14:35:32","modified_gmt":"2015-08-03T14:35:32","slug":"family-awarded-17-8-million-after-medication-error-causes-child-to-suffer-from-brain-damage-and-cerebral-palsy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gilhoylaw.com\/blog\/family-awarded-17-8-million-after-medication-error-causes-child-to-suffer-from-brain-damage-and-cerebral-palsy\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Awarded $17.8 Million After Medication Error Causes Child to Suffer From Brain Damage and Cerebral Palsy."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/znK1HUN8s2A\"><strong><em>Medication errors<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong> harm at least 1.5 million people in the United States each year.<\/strong>\u00a0 The National Academy of Medicine estimates that 400,000 preventable drug-related injuries occur each year in hospitals alone.\u00a0 Another 800,000 occur in <a href=\"https:\/\/gilhoylaw.com\/boston-massachusetts-nursing-home-elderly-abuse-lawyers-attorneys.php\"><strong><em>nursing homes<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and long-term care settings, and approximately 530,000 occur just among Medicare recipients in outpatient facilities.\u00a0 Tragically, when a medication error occurs, it can cause grievous injury.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w-KfNEV4EVE\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After complications from birth, Naomi Pressey was transferred to the Children\u2019s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, Colorado.\u00a0 At the hospital, Naomi was diagnosed and administered a medication called prostaglandin.\u00a0 <strong>However, the hospital staff gave Pressey the wrong dose and the infant girl went into cardiac arrest.<\/strong>\u00a0 She remained unconscious for 33 minutes, which caused her to suffer \u201csevere hypoxic ischemic brain injury, resulting in cerebral palsy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to ABC 7, Pressey\u2019s family filed a lawsuit against the Children\u2019s Hospital Colorado.\u00a0 <strong>The Pressey family was awarded $17.8 million, the biggest medical malpractice verdict ever in Colorado<\/strong>.\u00a0 Pressey, who is now 7 years old, suffers from serious disabilities and will require constant supervision for the remainder of her life.\u00a0 This award will help the Pressey family pay for medical bills and continue to care for their daughter in years to come.
